Reflect on the importance of prayer and sacrifice for loved ones who have left the faith, inspired by St. Monica's example and today's Gospel message.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33
What are we afraid of? Are we afraid of the dark? Are we afraid of tomorrow? Do we fear the unknown? Do we fear loss of money, social status, health, or the love of others? One thing we should not fear is proclaiming Jesus Christ. This Gospel tells us to “proclaim on the housetops!" Sometimes, proclaiming the Gospel to those closest to us is the most difficult, even those who live under our own roof. A while back, I was discussing a sinful situation a family member was in, a sin that society has no issues with. They said to me, “Don’t you just want them to be happy?" Of course, I want them to be happy, but earthly happiness is not guaranteed. The happiness we should want for all people is eternal happiness in heaven.
As children get older, go off to college, and into the workforce, society begins to tug at them against the Gospel, sometimes to the point they no longer want to hear us “preach” to them. If it’s to that point, all we can do is pray mighty prayers. Think of how many prayers, accompanied by tears, St. Monica prayed for St. Augustine, and they are now both saints in heaven! Pray for children and family members, and give up snacks or TV along with those prayers. Ask St. Monica to petition God in their behalf, on your behalf, and pray without ceasing. Most of all, trust in God.
Ponder:
How can we offer prayers and sacrifices for those who have left the faith?
Pray:
St. Monica, we ask you to petition God on our behalf for those in our families and for our friends who have left the faith. Present our tears and prayers to our Heavenly Father.
Pray Together:
Gather the family and pray the Rosary, offering it for those whom you know who have left the faith.
