Today's Gospel: Mark 4:35-41
“A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up.”
Does this verse resonate with you today? Is your boat thrashing in a storm, filling with weight that threatens to sink you, waves breaking over you as you fear how you can stay afloat?
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Many of us feel that way during the storms of life, questioning with the Apostles. Doesn’t He care? But there’s a different question in this Gospel we are invited to ponder--when Jesus asks, “Why are you terrified?”
Fr. John Riccardo, when preaching on this Gospel, said this is a question we too must answer in the storms of life: Why are we afraid? If we truly believe that the God who controls the wind and the waves loves us and is with us during hard times, and that He works everything for our ultimate good, there is no need to be afraid. Fear often weighs our boats down more than anything else, and Jesus wants to set us free from that burden.
He wants us to know His love and to trust Him so deeply that His presence is enough to calm our hearts during the most treacherous of storms. He is always in control, working all things for good. He will never abandon us, and while we don’t know when He will calm the storm, we do know He can calm our hearts if we turn to Him. He sleeps not because He doesn’t care, but because He is in control and knows that everything will be okay.
Let His loving presence be enough for you today in any storms you face. He is with you as your boat rocks. He offers you the eternal peace that will fill you more completely than the earthly peace of an easy life. Though the winds and waters feel out of control, He is not. He will bring you safely through.
Ponder:
What is your greatest fear in your current storm?
Pray:
Lord, I ask for Your peace today. May it keep me steady and trusting in You no matter what comes.
