Discover how to guide your family in choosing the narrow gate of life, rooted in Gospel values, while navigating the world's diversity with respect and integrity.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:6, 12-14
There is great beauty found in the diversity of the world, and there is so much to be learned from one another. However, at the same time, we have the responsibility of teaching our children how to navigate those spaces without losing their own identity or value systems in the process. In our own house, we have come across things as innocent as “but my friend’s mom lets us do X over at her house” to the more serious conversations about “why does X happen in the world?” These can be stressful conversations but are wonderful teaching moments on morality for our children.
We have developed a mantra in our own household: “There are many ways to live a life and we choose to live differently.” Put another way in today’s Gospel, the gates of life may be wide, but we strive to choose the narrow gate. The narrow gate is not impossible, but it does require focus and prudence. We cannot take for granted the need to imbue the Gospel message into our children so that they too can navigate this gate. There are plenty of things out there to distract us, or even to make life more comfortable and friction-free, but, ultimately, that broad road “leads to destruction.” In order to stay focused, the Truth and values out of which we make our daily choices must be clear.
Most importantly, as we navigate public space, we must follow the Golden Rule provided here, always treating everyone with respect and dignity, despite these differences. It is in this way that we are able to navigate differences, stay true to the Truth of Jesus Christ, and stay focused on the narrow gate.
Ponder:
How does your family choose to live differently from the world in order to seek the narrow gate?
Pray:
Eternal Father, grant us courage to keep our focus on You and to model for our children the way to the narrow gate. Guide us with the peace and grace to love one another while remaining true to Your will for our lives.
Pray Together:
Develop a family mantra together than encourages everyone to remain focused on the Lord during conflict or temptation from the world. Put it in a visible family space as a reminder.
