Reflection by Connie Beckman
Today's Gospel: Matthew 8:28-34
In Matthew’s Gospel today, it is interesting that the demoniacs know who Jesus is and know of His power. The owners of the herd of swine, however, were concerned about their swine drowning in the sea.
"Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their district.”
I can certainly understand why the swine owners wanted nothing to do with Jesus, because they only saw their livelihood drown in the sea. The townspeople did not realize that Jesus came to give them life. The people were filled with fear and did not acknowledge that Jesus had driven off the demons.
Sometimes in life, the material things we hold dear to our hearts can be gone in an instant. For example, the car we love is totaled in an accident or you are devastated because your home is destroyed by fire, tornado, or a hurricane. These material things are indeed necessary to live comfortably in this life, but no one or thing can destroy our relationship with Jesus--ever!
When disaster strikes unexpectedly, we know Jesus can give us the strength to move on. Jesus is the great restorer and healer of our hearts. Let us always place ourselves in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the old hymn goes: "No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock [Jesus] I’m clinging."
Ponder:
What storms of life have you been through or are you going through? Surrender it all to Jesus.
Pray:
Lord, help me to cling to You above all things. Let me not be distracted by the material and mundane.
