Explore the journey of belief in the Gospel of John as Thomas encounters Christ. Strengthen your faith and reflect on your relationship with God today.
Today's Gospel: John 20:24-29
If I told you that next Friday the sun would rise in the west, you might say, “I'll believe that when I see it.” You wouldn’t just doubt that it could happen, you would disbelieve it.
It is the same with Thomas. “Unless I see . . . I will not believe.” That statement tells us a lot about him. Thomas was with Jesus and the other eleven all the time, and he saw miracles every day. But Jesus died and was buried, and now Thomas is told that Jesus appeared to them. Thomas didn’t doubt it, he disbelieved it.
A week later, when Thomas was with the others, Jesus appeared again and it was like He knew already what Thomas sought.
“Put your finger here and see my hands . . . and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
As I meditated on this scripture, the Lord’s invitation to believe became an invitation to ponder the word “believe.”
Who or what do you put your belief in? We never know if we can believe the weather forecast. That story you heard at the coffee shop? Whether or not it’s true depends on who you heard it from.
Take some time today to think back to the moment you first came to believe in Jesus. Is your faith in Him strong enough to believe Him when he says, “You are loved. You are strong. You are mine”?
The next time you recite the Creed at Mass, listen closely and your mind will process the words more deeply as you begin, “I believe.”
Ponder:
Ask God to show you if there is an area of your faith that He wants to strengthen. Is there something you doubt or that you don’t believe that He wants to correct so that you can draw closer to Him?
Pray:
Lord, I believe. Please help my unbelief and, in the places where I doubt, align my beliefs to Your truth.
Pray Together:
Discuss as a family your need to see in order to believe. Do you readily accept what someone tells you as true, or do you need proof to allay your doubts? How can you know whether or not to trust and believe?
