Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:24-33
This short passage from Matthew is like a treasure chest filled with gems. Familiar to us are the promises that every secret will be made known, the hairs on your head are numbered, and you are worth more than sparrows.
However, the second verse in this passage is a teaching that should not be missed:
“It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master.”
How do we, disciples and slaves, become like the one who is our teacher and master? We listen.
In the opening verse of the prologue of his Rule, St. Benedict writes, “Listen carefully, my son, to the master’s instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. This is advice from a father who loves you; welcome it, and faithfully put it into practice.”
St. Benedict tells us to listen with the ear of our hearts. This is a place deep inside, which envelops our intellect and emotions. We may find ourselves listening spiritually. It means we are receptive and open. It is a place of humility, recognizing that we are in need of the Master. When we listen with the ear of our heart, we sit at His feet.
To put this into practice is easy. Just make time each day to put yourself in the presence of God. Don’t bring your prayer book or your prayer list. Just make time to be with Him every day. It is in this time of quiet where He will whisper sweet nothings in your ear, such as you are so loved that even the hairs on your head are numbered. You are worth more than sparrows.
Your teacher and master will begin to form you to be just like Him.
Ponder:
Jesus anticipates your being with Him. How much time can you find in each day to spend in the presence of the Lord, in your church or even on your couch?
Pray:
Jesus, I want to be a disciple at Your feet. Please give me the grace to be patient with myself as I learn to listen with the ear of my heart.
Pray Together:
Studies show that even a few minutes of quiet each day are good for us, body, soul, and spirit. Implement a quiet time during your day. If you have small children, find a fun timer and set aside time for quiet. Start with just a minute or two. Use pictures of Bible stores or saint holy cards for younger ages; older children and adults can enjoy being with Jesus by taking a walk with Him in their imagination.
