Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

Today’s Gospel passage captures a pivotal expansion of Jesus’ ministry. He expands His mission from the twelve disciples to seventy-two people whom He sends out in pairs to share the Gospel. This is a six-fold expansion of the ministry! Sharing the Gospel is an expansive task.

Have you ever noticed that in service roles, especially in our parishes, much of the work is accomplished by the same small group of people? As Jesus said, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.”

Today’s Gospel, in part, reminds us of our responsibility to invite people to join us in the life of discipleship. Jesus sends the seventy-two out two by two because the work of sharing the Gospel is always an act of community.

As moms in a parish, so often we are the people teaching religious education, training altar servers, washing altar linens, and bringing meals to the sick. One way to inspire a life of discipleship is to invite our children to join us in our mission of serving.

For example, a middle school child enhances the life of the Church and her own faith by assisting in a religious education class for young children. A young child may share the joy of the Gospel by drawing a picture to include in a meal delivered to another family in need. A teen may experience a deeper devotion to the Eucharist by washing and ironing altar linens (not to mention learning a life skill).

Ponder:

Where do you see a need in your faith community? How might you invite the people around you to join you on mission?

Pray:

Lord, we give You thanks that Your vision for the Church is expansive. Help us to recognize ways to invite others to join as fellow workers in the vineyard.
