Discover the power of faith in today's Gospel as Jesus heals a woman and brings a girl back to life, reminding us that nothing is impossible with God.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:18-26
It's been said that when you are hanging on by a thread, you should make sure it's the hem of His garment. This reference to today's Gospel reading describes the plight of the woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years. In a desperate effort for relief, the woman reaches out from among the crowd and grasps the tassel of Jesus's garment, hoping for a miracle. With the words, "Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you," Jesus responds by healing the woman of her affliction.
Along with the story of the woman, this passage also reveals how, with the touch of His hand, Jesus brings an official's daughter back to life, to the amazement of the crowds.
The recipients of these two miracles share a common element: absolute confidence and faith in Jesus's power. In both instances, the individuals seeking a healing were convinced of Jesus's ability to come through for them and answer their prayers. The simple yet confident phrases, "She will live" from the grieving official, and "I shall be cured" from the hemorrhaging woman convey the unwavering faith of each in Him. Jesus Himself affirms that the woman's great faith is, indeed, what has obtained her healing.
Jesus asks this great faith from each of us as well. When we are in desperate situations and it seems there is no hope, we can remember that nothing is impossible with God. When we reach out with confidence and trust to touch the hem of His garment, we receive the graces and miracles we seek in our own lives.
Ponder:
Do I truly believe that Jesus wants to heal me and answer each of my prayers according to His perfect will?
Pray:
Jesus, please give me confidence and faith to reach out for You when I am in need. Help me to trust in Your power to heal me and answer my prayers.
Pray Together:
Have family members write down prayers of petition, praise, and thanksgiving on slips of paper. Create and decorate a Family Prayer Box to collect the prayer intentions.
