Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:18-26

We can learn a great deal from the hemorrhaging woman's unwavering faith. Just as He did for her, Jesus allows us to reach out to Him—to touch His heart and to receive an outpouring of His grace into our lives. After nearly twenty years in women's Catholic ministry, I am still astounded by the number of women who have no idea how precious they are to the Lord.

In this encounter, we discover a subtle unfolding of a dual meaning of the word "touched" in their exchange. In Luke's account of this story, Jesus wants to identify the person of faith who touched Him:

"And Jesus said, 'Who touched me?'" Luke 8:45

Courage, maybe fueled by desperation, moved the hemorrhaging woman to seek His help, and He, moved by her faith, seeks her out. Perhaps Jesus asks a more profound question: "Who has touched my heart with the tender touch of trust, hope, courage, and faith?" Whatever moved her, she took the leap of faith to reach out, and Jesus responded.

And then I wonder, what do I need to reach out to Jesus for, and what fear or doubt holds me back from doing so? Even though I know He desires it, I still worry about it. I struggle with this crazy belief that I only get so many prayers answered. Yet, Jesus is not a genie in a bottle; there's no limit to His love, mercy, and desire to assist me.

The hemorrhaging woman is out of options. I have found myself in situations where I suffered far longer than needed out of stubbornness or ignorance because the answer was always within reach. If I would just reach out to Jesus in faith, I, too, could go in peace, as the healed woman did.

Ponder:

What do you need to reach out to Jesus for? What holds you back? How will you approach the Lord in faith?

Pray:

Jesus, You are the Divine Physician, who longs to have us come to You in faith, hope, trust, and love to mend our broken places. Please send an outpouring of Your grace into my hemorrhaging places so that I may be healed.
