Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:16-23
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is sending the twelve on a mission, and He sends us on a mission, too, with ample warnings about what to expect as we share His message of peace with a hostile world. Like sheep amid wolves, we might think we should fear the road ahead, but Our Lord reminds us not to worry, especially when it comes to what we should say. Why? Because the words will be given to us by the Spirit.
If you’ve ever been caught off guard by a question and stuttered your way through a half-baked response, you know what it feels like to think later, “If only I’d said the right thing.” But Jesus tells us to be shrewd—wise, cunning, and ready for anything—and to give ourselves over to the Holy Spirit when we don’t know what to say.
What might that look like? Well, we might choose to stop and think before we speak, and in that brief moment ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. The pause alone can melt some of our tension away, and by asking the Spirit to be a part of our interactions, we give Him the opportunity to speak through us. And even if we might not say exactly the right thing every time we take part in a difficult conversation, the Holy Spirit can help us avoid saying exactly the wrong thing.
This works for basic, everyday interactions and for the important, life-changing work of evangelization as well. Like the twelve, we may encounter people who aren’t quite ready to hear the truth of the Gospel, but we can always be ready, with the Spirit’s help, to share it without fear.
Ponder:
How should we respond when people aren't ready to hear the Gospel?
Pray:
Come, Holy Spirit. Help me always to communicate with grace, truth, and love.
Pray Together:
Say a special prayer for those who resist or reject the truth of the Gospel, that their hearts might be opened so the Spirit can enter.
