Explore how the parable of the sower encourages us to spread God's Word in unexpected places and become good soil for faith in our lives and communities.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23

Any competent farmer wouldn’t waste seeds by planting them where they cannot grow: bad soil, rocky ground, amidst prickly thorns, or on the well-trodden path. And yet that’s exactly what the sower does in this parable. We human beings are calculated and conservative. We waste not, want not. But here we aren’t talking about material goods that can run out.

The sower, God, is spreading the seed of his Word. The Word of God, Jesus Incarnate, has come to reveal to us the love of the Father and to grant us the gift of faith for eternal life. God's love exists in such abundance that it is never wasted. Wherever there is a bit of hope, there is God’s love searching for us. The Good News of the Gospel is for every person regardless of race, religion, or background. God came that all should be saved.

I think about our parishes – a conglomeration of people, most of whom we don’t usually know with different jobs, ways of life, and personalities. While we have the faith in common, we are likely living it out to varying degrees. In some, the soil might seem hopeless for deeper conversion or lasting change, but, in hope, the sower still spreads seeds.

When I hear this Gospel, I usually think about how I can be better soil. But this time, I was compelled to reflect on how God is sowing seeds today, and how I can help the sower plant the Word in others’ hearts. A witness in the grocery store, a word of encouragement to a neighbor, a seed of the Gospel to a co-worker. God is using us to help spread His seeds to every place imaginable. God is asking us to plant His Word in every corner of the world.

Ponder:

How can I help spread the message of the Gospel in an unlikely place this week?

Pray:

Father, You are good and generous and never stop planting seeds of Your Word. Help me to be good soil and to spread the Good News.

Pray Together:

Pick someone you know who is not living the faith and look for an opportunity to plant a seed of the Good News in their life.
