Today's Gospel: Luke 17:26-37
As I sit with this Gospel, my mind is filled with images of the devastating flooding that occurred in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida after hurricanes Helene and Milton. Who prepares for a hurricane in the mountains of Tennessee? One day they were eating, drinking, marrying, and then boom – entire towns are wiped out, hundreds missing or dead. They are on the housetop and cannot go down to get their belongings because all their stuff is gone.
In my day-to-day, I have to think about the here and now: groceries, bills, laundry, activities, etc. Yet in the midst of the daily grind, I must keep in the forefront the verse that says,
“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Matthew 16:25
All the activities of daily life can point us to the eternal if we are laying down our life.
Motherhood is all about laying your life down for the sake of your spouse, children, and mission. That doesn’t mean leisure and recharging aren’t necessary—and prayer goes without saying, but motherhood will be my path to heaven if I am giving willingly and joyfully to my family, knowing that my stuff won’t come with me but my soul will. Forming my soul through learning to love is exactly where God is calling me.
We never know what disaster will drain our savings or harm our bodies. Let us not lose sight of our eternal destination, and let us allow the surrender of our will to the daily chores and needs of our children to lead us there.
Ponder:
What is an earthly belonging I am holding on to? What is one way I can “lose” my life for my family today?
Pray:
Father in heaven, take care of us, Your children. Give us the grace to lay our lives down for our family and community and find our life in You.
