Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30

Today’s Gospel passage is one of those “short but sweet” portions of sacred scripture that is well worth committing to memory. As we complete our reading of the eleventh chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus continues to instruct the crowds with words that are increasingly personal in nature. Having just thanked God, His father, Jesus offers those gathered words of consolation that withstand the test of time.

Although meant as a balm for the people of that particular age who found themselves overly burdened by the teachings of the scribes and Pharisees, these three verses provide for us the same loving prescription He offered the crowds physically assembled around Him. Our faith, the teachings of the Church, and the Good News of Christ’s teachings are not meant to be a burden to us but rather a way to see through the pain of life to something greater, more profoundly blessed than you and I could ever imagine.

Living as a follower of Christ does not mean we will be absolved of pain and suffering. Today, as we celebrate the memorial of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, we have the example of a woman who clung to her chosen faith with ferocity despite many trials. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said of Kateri, “May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are.”

Loving Jesus and living by God’s teachings does not mean this life will be easy. But it does mean that we never walk this journey alone. Today, let us remember to lean into the arms of the One Whose yoke will never exceed our abilities.

Ponder:

How have I seen my faith life as a burden rather than a gift? Where can I find a few quiet moments today to rest in the knowledge of God’s love for me?

Pray:

Thank you, Jesus, for the blessing of being yoked with love for You. Help me to carry my burdens today and to seek rest in the confidence that You are always in my heart.
