Explore today's Gospel reflection on repentance and the New Covenant, emphasizing the importance of faith in a fallen world and the miracles around us.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:20-24

Throughout the Old Testament, we hear of how men fell and how God established covenants (or special unions) with the people who followed Him. We all know those stories: Adam and Eve (the first covenant, which ended in disobedience), followed by faithful Noah, Abraham, and Moses. These are the old covenants, which established special relationships with God and His chosen people.

Our first parents, Adam and Eve, fell when they were tempted and then ate the forbidden fruit. And, many, many more people in the Old Testament fell after that. Today’s Gospel passage reminds us of the evil, corrupt, sinful, and fallen city of Sodom. Jesus is quite firm with His reprimand and warning in this passage. He is going through the towns, doing His “mighty deeds,” yet the people have still not repented. I can almost hear Him yelling, “I am literally walking around performing all kinds of miracles, and you all still do not believe!” Oh, how this is still so true today! There are so many miracles throughout our lives – from a caterpillar turning into a butterfly to the birth of a precious baby. Yet, people still turn from God and refuse to thank or even acknowledge Him. We know that our world is just as fallen today as it was when Jesus was rebuking the people in this passage.

Yet let us not despair because we are sons and daughters in the New Covenant in which Jesus shed His own Precious Blood to wash away our sins. Jesus died and poured out His blood for us. Let us “Repent, and believe in the Gospel,” as Jesus said (Mark 1:15), and let us raise our children to be bold, strong, and joyful soldiers of Christ.

Ponder:

In the midst of our chaotic and fallen world, how can I cling more tightly to Christ?

Pray:

Jesus, please protect us from the evil in this fallen world. Let us truly repent when we have done wrong, believe in the Gospel, and never hesitate to spread the Good News.

Pray Together:

The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus. Discuss as a family what it means for Jesus to be truly present in the Eucharist – body, blood, soul, and divinity.
