Reflect on Jesus's message of mercy in today's Gospel as we navigate conflict and practice compassion in our relationships. Discover how to embody mercy in difficult situations.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:1-8

Conflict arises in every human relationship at some point--within families, the Church, and the world at large. Today, Jesus reminds us that mercy fulfills and even transcends the law, and it is the perfect antidote to conflict.

When Jesus’s hungry disciples pluck grain while walking through a field on the sabbath, the Pharisees are quick to admonish them. Yet, Jesus does not respond in kind. Instead, He meets their accusations with both authority and mercy, invoking an impressive command of Scripture to reveal the deeper meaning of the Law. He references King David’s hunger, the example of temple priests working on the sabbath, and the prophet Hosea:

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”

The presence of Christ, something greater than the temple, sanctifies the behavior of the disciples, for He is the “Lord of the sabbath.”

Ultimately, Jesus desires us to be merciful, identifying ourselves with the suffering of others. He continues to desire mercy over sacrifice. We can live out this Gospel by bearing love and compassion to those who try us and to those with whom we disagree.

Ponder:

Think of a conflict you may be experiencing right now. How can you practice being merciful to others in this situation?

Pray:

Lord of all mercy, teach us to become merciful to others, particularly when faced with profound difficulties or seemingly insurmountable conflicts.

Pray Together:

Practice seeing in others the image of God. Pray for someone you don’t agree with. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry.
