Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:38-42

Although Jesus had presented the scribes and Pharisees with ample evidence of his divinity, they persisted in their unbelief of Him. In the Gospel passage today, they are demanding a sign from heaven, which Jesus responds that they will not receive. Instead, He gives them an indication of his impending Passion and death.

Jesus indicates that the reason they will not receive a sign is because they are an “evil and unfaithful” generation. It would be easy to believe that the sin of unbelief and unfaithfulness occurred only among the scribes and Pharisees and that we, as believers, are never guilty of lack of faith. However, at times, don’t we also doubt the goodness and mercy of our Lord? If we examine our consciences closely, we may find that we also doubt God and His faithfulness to us, preventing us from receiving these signs we so need that guide and encourage us along the way.

Signs are “objects, qualities, or events whose presence or occurrence indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else,” according to the dictionary definition. How many of these spiritual objects, qualities, or events God gifts us with each day, if only we are open to receiving them! When we pray with childlike trust in Him, He always listens and responds lovingly to our prayer. Just as Jesus, in His time on earth, performed numerous miracles, cast out demons, and effected healings for the people, so does He continue today to allow signs of His love and power to strengthen our faith. It may be a word of wisdom from a friend or adviser, an act of kindness, or even those “God-incidences,” which are unmistakably signs from above when we most need them.

Ponder:

In what ways do I sometimes doubt the goodness and mercy of Jesus and His love for me? How can I be more open to receive the signs from our Lord that He bestows upon His faithful ones?

Pray:

Jesus, please renew my faith and trust in You so that I can be open to receive the subtle signs of Your love that You long to give me.
