Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:10-17

We are surrounded by noise and sights that shift our attention from God to the present moment. We think we are understanding what God is trying to say to us, but we find ourselves scrambling, trying to figure out where we have gone wrong in the interpretation.

Today’s Gospel reminds us that the spirit of discernment is real and is also a gift. Insight into the “mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven,” is granted to some believers and followers, but is not something given to everyone. Too often, we have a tendency to want to have all the answers, but there is a caution in the Gospel reminding us that the revelation of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven isn't meant for everyone.

Yet, what is available to everyone is the message of God’s love. Love and trust are two completely different actions, but both are conscious actions, and we are invited to return God’s love and to trust in Him, on a daily basis.

God’s love is given freely to each of us, and He hopes that we reciprocate that love. Sometimes, in our feeble, human attempts to love, we search for answers from God. Today’s Gospel doesn’t say that it’s not okay to search for the answers. Instead, we are lovingly cautioned that maybe our search will yield no results, and perhaps that’s not a cause for concern.

Rather, today’s Gospel gently encourages us to continue to meet God in prayer, study God’s voice in scripture, and go to God’s side when we meet Him in the sacraments and in those around us. Spread God’s love to all those you encounter – in your home, in your community, and in the world at large.

Ponder:

How are you best able to detect and share God's message of love in your life?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the many gracious opportunities to feel Your love every day. Help me be courageous to pass along Your love to all I encounter.
