Today's Gospel: John 20:1-2,11-18

Whose voice do you recognize without any introduction? Perhaps your spouse, your child, a parent, or a best friend? Today we celebrate the Feast of Mary Magdalene. She was a friend of Jesus and is remembered with a feast equal to the apostles because she was, as early Christian writers referred to her, “the Apostle to the Apostles.”

“Apostelo” is the Greek verb for “I send out.” It was Mary Magdalene who was sent out to announce to the disciples that the stone had been rolled away and that that Jesus was gone from the tomb on Easter Sunday.

When I read this passage, I imagine that Mary visited Jesus’ tomb while dew was still on the ground. Perhaps there was a chill in the air. She went to the tomb to grieve. As she wept at the tomb, Jesus spoke to her, calling, “Mary!” and she recognized His voice. This recognition shows us that Mary had a close relationship with Jesus. As Mary recognized Jesus’s voice, I bet that Jesus recognized her voice, too.

One of the beautiful things about praying with Scripture is that we grow to recognize the voice of God through His words. In those words, God also speaks to our hearts. When we pray, we share our voices with God.

God recognizes your voice without introduction. Indeed, God gave you your voice. So go to God with that familiarity today.

Ponder:

Where do you hear God’s voice? What does it mean to you to know that Jesus recognizes your voice?

Pray:

God, thank You for sharing Your voice with us in scripture. Keep us mindful that You know our voice with particularity because you created it.
