Today's Gospel: John 11:19-27
Today is the feast day of siblings Martha, Mary and Lazarus, friends of Jesus who often hosted Him in their home in Bethany when Jesus traveled to nearby Jerusalem to celebrate feasts.
When we hear the names of the sisters, most of us think of the story of Martha getting upset at her sister for not helping her make and serve food to Jesus and His disciples (Luke 10:38-42). Most women can identify with one or the other of the women.
Today’s reading from the Gospel of John occurs later in Jesus’ ministry when Lazarus dies, shortly before Jesus Himself dies. We see evidence here of how Martha learned a lesson from the earlier interaction with Jesus because she was awaiting the arrival of Jesus and ran to greet Him, rather than worrying about cleaning the house.
Her words now show such deep belief in Him as the Savior of the world. First, she claims that she knows without a doubt that had Jesus been there, her brother wouldn’t have died in the first place. Then she quickly proclaims that even though Lazarus had been dead for four days, she believes, “that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Her final words show ultimate faith:
“I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” John 11:27
We should be like Martha with such beautiful faith in our Loving Father, who can do the impossible.
Ponder:
What situation are you currently facing that has caused doubt in God’s providence?
Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to believe that You love me, care about me and want me to spend time with You to grow my faith. Please give me the boldness to proclaim my confidence in You as my Messiah to someone today.
