Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23
I enjoy reading the interactions between Peter and Jesus in the Gospel. In today’s reading, for example, we see two different sides to Peter. One that shows his holiness and leadership in the Church when he recognizes that Jesus is the Son of God, and in turn, is appointed as the first pope after Jesus’ death.
The other side of Peter we are shown is his humanity. Peter becomes very upset when Jesus predicts His suffering. And, like any friend would, Peter tells Jesus that He will not have to suffer. By doing so, he neglects to see the overall picture of why Jesus is really there. Jesus’ response is all we need to hear when He replies,
“Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me.” Matthew 16:23
We all have to endure hardships in various moments of our lives. No one enjoys suffering or taking the difficult path. And I am sure that many times, we find ourselves tempted to take the easy way out if it is presented to us. God doesn’t want us to suffer; however, we can allow ourselves to grow from the difficult experience and ultimately increase our faith in Him, creating a stronger relationship with Him.
For me, this Gospel reading makes Peter so relatable because we are all striving towards holiness in our faith, but also have moments where we fail to trust God’s plan and see the big picture for our lives. Even though Peter had his moments, Jesus still entrusted Him with a leadership position for the Church. It personally gives me hope that despite my bad days, God still holds a special place for me, too.
Ponder:
Have you ever tried to take the more comfortable route? When have you embraced the difficult path God set before you and ended up stronger and in a better place in your faith life because of it?
Pray:
Lord, give me the wisdom to choose the path that brings me closer to You. St. Peter, pray for us!
