Reflect on the miracles in your life as you strengthen your faith, inspired by the Gospel of Matthew and the journey of Peter's belief.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:22-23

A couple of years ago, I read this passage in the context of the Gospel of Matthew—so right after reading about the feeding of the 5,000. I was surprised.

The apostles just saw Jesus turn five loaves and two fishes into enough food to feed 5,000 men (plus women and children). And yet, Peter does not believe Jesus will save him when he starts to sink. “What kind of weak faith must he have had?” I thought.

Immediately, a thought occurred to me—one of those thoughts that feels like it comes from outside me (and so, I must assume, it does).

“What kind of miracles have you seen in your life?” the Holy Spirit prompted me to ask myself. “And yet how often do you doubt?”

True, I haven’t seen Jesus multiply food, but I’ve seen Him multiply my energy after I spent most of the night feeding a baby.

I haven’t seen Him heal the blind, but I have seen Him give me—a woman with PCOS and endometriosis—two healthy little girls.

I didn’t see Him resurrected, but I feel and receive His presence every Sunday at Mass.

“You of little faith,” indeed! I surely would have sunk with Peter. Yet he became a saint—and so can I.

So can you.

Ponder:

What miracles has God worked in my own life? How can reflecting on them strengthen my faith in His goodness?

Pray:

Lord, like Peter, I want to believe. Help my unbelief.

Pray Together:

Talk at the end of the day about miracles, large or small, you've seen that day—anything from the beautiful sunrise to the news of a friend's good health.
