Today's Gospel: John 12:24-26
Twenty-two years ago today, my dad became a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church. I remember the day so vividly. I was asked to photograph the event, so I had a front row seat throughout the Mass. There were so many thoughts going through my mind. I was so proud of him, so happy to be a part of this milestone in his life (especially since I had been living out of the country just a year prior). Yet there was a part of me that was a bit concerned. Would he still have time for his family? Would his new role of leadership in the Church demand too much of him? And, would he let it go to his head?
Today is the Feast of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. He lived a life of service unto death. And that is what a present-day deacon is called to do as well, to serve the Church in whatever capacity his pastor asks of him. My parents had the privilege of mentoring engaged couples for many years. Now they bring Holy Communion to the homebound and those in nursing homes. My dad often leads wakes and memorial services for loved ones who have passed. And he has had the honor and privilege of baptizing most of his grandchildren and even witnessing the marriage of a few of his children.
A call to serve. Isn’t that what we are all called to? In today’s Gospel Jesus declares:
“Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.”
He doesn’t say to follow Him only when we happen to have the time. He doesn’t say that He will always be in a comfy, cozy place. He simply asks us to follow Him and to be where He is, because that’s where He calls us to be.
Ponder:
Lord, where are You calling me to serve You?
Pray:
Lord, help me to serve You wherever You are calling me to. May I not be deterred by difficulty but seek to please You alone.
