Today's Gospel: Matthew 19:3-12
Here Jesus talks of unions: marriages between men and women, single folks, and those divorced.
We find ourselves living in one of those categories by choice or decree, and sometimes our unions — or lack of — are challenging. Jesus Himself offers consolation in verse 11,
“Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom that is granted.”
And that is by being open to God’s grace.
Discerning God’s will, which is always for our good, may be difficult to understand. My own divorce decades ago, was painful — my husband ran off with my brother’s wife. The resulting singleness allowed for new spiritual paths to open in ways previously stifled in that relationship.
Initially being alone was a hard path to walk, but with spiritual direction, one that allowed a deepening faith. For me it was discovering a true calling to an eremitic life.
Ponder:
Looking at your own marital status. Name five blessings associated with being single, married, or divorced.
Pray:
Dear Lord, I thank You for the gifts of marriage, for the gifts of singleness, for the gifts of all relationships that are a call to love.
