Daily Gospel Reflection for August 12, 2026

Today's Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20

This Gospel gives us a glimpse into the messiness of living in community. Jesus doesn’t say that once you accept Him as your Lord and Savior, you will never fight or quarrel again, and that grace will fix everything. He knows we will still have free will, differences of opinion, and have to work things out. And he knows that sometimes we will never come to a resolution. But we must at least try.

I love the progression of trying first to reconcile privately, talking one-on-one before bringing a few trusted people in, and only if that doesn’t work, to then air the grievance to the whole Church. How often do we gossip about our problems before trying to resolve them!  It reminds me of a story about St. Philip Neri.  He had a woman confess gossip to him. For her penance, she had to take a down-feathered pillow, go to the top of the bell tower in the city, open the pillow, and release all the feathers. Then she could come back to him for absolution. So she obeyed and spread the feathers all throughout the town. Then St. Philip told her to go collect all of them and she replied she couldn’t possibly find them all! That was his lesson to her on the problem with gossip – words, once they are shared, aren’t easily taken back again.

Speaking of confession, this Gospel contains one of the verses that shows us what  Jesus meant by Reconciliation: in the Sacrament, the priest is given the power to loose and bind sins. For a priest to loosen a sin means it is forgiven in heaven, and when bound, they are not forgiven in heaven. Our contrition—our sorrow— leads to reconciliation with God and other people—the body of Christ.

Ponder:

Do I have a grievance with someone that I need to try to reconcile?

Pray:

Lord, help me to forgive others so You will forgive me. I pray for a softened heart towards those who have hurt me, and that You would soften their hearts too.

Pray Together:

Go to confession and confess any trouble you have with forgiveness or gossip.
