Reflection by Christina Weigand

Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-56

“My. soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, For He has regarded the low estate if His handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed." (Luke 1: 46-48)

I remember as a child I felt a special affinity for Mary. It would be so cool to be the mother of Jesus. As I got older I realized everything that went into being a mother, a wife, being the mother of Jesus lost a little bit of its appeal, especially when I thought about the sacrifice and pain she suffered.

Where does that leave me now? I’m a woman, daughter, mother, wife, writer, daughter of God; so similar and yet so dissimilar. Ultimately Mary is the example for all women, all followers. She without question accepted God’s plan. I’m sure like me she doubted, feared, but saw past her misgivings and rejoiced in God the Savior.

As I write this, ten months before you will be reading it, the world is in turmoil. Between a pandemic and a presidential election in the United States, many people live in fear and doubt. People are disagreeing with their friends and family. I don’t know how things will be when this is published. What I do know if there was ever a time to turn to Mary and her Son, to follow their example it is now.

Every day, every year, no matter what is happening in the world, is a time, to look to Mary’s life and Mary’s Assumption and call out to her. She shows us the way to redemption, to life with her Son. While Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, Mary is the guiding light pointing us to Eternity with God.

Ponder:

How can Mary help me to find my way in this crazy world?

Pray:

Blessed Virgin, help me to see past the fears and doubts that the world would have me embrace, and see through your eyes what God would have for me.
