Today's Gospel: Matthew 19:16-22
If you are reading this, most likely you are like the man in the Gospel who has striven to follow the Ten Commandments your whole life. You aren’t a murderer, a swindler and cheat, and you treat your parents with respect and honor.
Jesus says that is not enough. It’s not enough just to be a “good person” if we don’t follow Him by worshiping and praying to God daily, or by being willing to take up our crosses and sacrifice in the name of Jesus. No matter our state in life, I believe Jesus is saying there is always room to do more as His follower.
Do you go to Mass only on Sundays? Maybe you could add a daily Mass into your week. Do you say a daily decade of the Rosary? Try to add another decade or a whole Rosary. Do you volunteer monthly in your community or church? Try to add an additional day or charitable organization to give your time to. Do you have a crucifix hanging prominently in your home for visitors to see? Make it obvious to visitors whom you believe in without having to say a word.
God gives us free will because He wants us to choose to adore Him, like we want our children to hug us each day because they want to and not because we make them. This same free will allowed Jesus to let the rich young ruler walk away because Jesus wanted him to choose to take the next step in being a holier person. Don’t be sad and walk away from His challenge of making you a better person.
Ponder:
Will you bravely take that next step in your spiritual growth to proclaim Jesus as your Savior?
Pray:
My dear Jesus, thank You for challenging us to grow closer to You by sacrificing some area of comfort in our lives and schedules. Help us have the courage and strength to answer Your call and love You more.
Pray Together:
Which one of the challenges above can you and your family do together to devote more time or energy in serving God?
