Explore the profound significance of names in the Gospel of Matthew, and reflect on how Peter's recognition of Jesus as the Christ deepens our faith.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20
For much of human history, names have held critical power and authority. To tell someone your name meant giving them power. They were able to summon you by name. They knew something intimate and personal about who you were. While much of modern society doesn’t hold names with this level of gravity and import, names are still an important piece of our culture. One of the first questions any new parent gets is, “What is their name?” There is something fundamentally human about naming.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Jesus asks His followers what they think of His identity. Who is He? Is He one prophet among many? Is He a great leader Who is destined to reunite the people? Is he someone of old, come back to give warning and encouragement?
Who is he?
There is both beautiful simplicity as well as complex mystery in Peter’s reply.
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Simple enough, Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. The promised one who will fulfill the prophecies and save the people. But also, what? How?
"Son of the living God," now there’s a head-scratcher. How can God have a Son? Jesus is clearly a human being, so how can he be God’s Son?
Peter, in his ability to let the Holy Spirit speak through him, names something totally new and unique in the world. He identifies Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, the Incarnation, walking before his own eyes.
Because of Peter, we have received this same revelation of the Father. We know who Jesus is, recognizing both His wonderful simplicity and awe-inspiring mystery. We can trust in Peter, and in his successors, to continue to guide us to Jesus’s presence in the world.
Ponder:
How do the teachings of the pope encourage your relationship with Jesus?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your great generosity in providing the Church with shepherds to lead and guide us. Please be with Pope Leo and with the whole Church as we continue to walk in Your way of truth, justice, love, and mercy.
Pray Together:
Many modern names have traditional names associated with them. What do the names of you and your family members historically mean? Can you make up your own meanings based on the individual family members' personalities?
