Today's Gospel: John 1:45-51

Have you ever known someone that you thought would really get a lot out of going to the Catholic Church? Maybe it was a friend or a co-worker. Maybe it was even your spouse! My friend took her non-Catholic Mennonite fiancé to church for the first time after their engagement. She held her breath, watching him closely through the entire Mass, and felt a wave of relief when the closing hymn started. Just as she had hoped, he didn't hate it. In fact, it intrigued him. Eventually they were married in the Church, and shortly after that he converted! Now he's a fixture in the parish, and it's hard to remember a time when he was not involved with practicing his Catholic faith.

That's what this Gospel reminds me of. Philip is so excited to take his friend Nathaniel (aka Bartholomew) to meet Jesus. Philip wanted his friend to know the joy of knowing Christ. Philip's hunch that Nathaniel would appreciate meeting Jesus was spot on. And just like my friend's husband, Nathaniel became an enthusiastic disciple of Christ. Nathaniel converted many souls, eventually ending his ministry in martyrdom.

Many souls were saved because Philip took the time to bring his friend to Jesus.

Ponder:

Is there someone in your life that you feel motivated to invite to church?

Pray:

Dear Lord, thank You for the example of St. Philip's invitation to come and meet Jesus. Help me to have the courage and wisdom to invite people in my path to do the same.
