Daily Gospel Reflection for August 25, 2026

Reflect on the Gospel of Matthew and the importance of inner virtue over outward appearances. Embrace humility and the grace of Confession in your spiritual journey.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 23:23-26

This Scripture passage criticizes the scribes and Pharisees who clean the outside of the cup and dish but ignore the necessity of cleaning the inside. If I think of myself as this cup, this Scripture illustrates how easy it is to appear to be a good person while holding onto sins such as gossip or greed. Christ calls us to be kind and merciful, not just in public, but in private too. If we are not, we are like the scribes and Pharisees, who are hypocrites.

This Gospel reminds me of the importance of judging and improving myself first before I ever look at the faults of my brothers and sisters in Christ. Although I continue to learn and re-learn the importance of humility, it is easy to fall into bad habits such as gossiping or poking fun at people outside our close circle of family and friends. The sacrament of Confession is the best place to take my failures, knowing that if I am truly contrite, I will be forgiven and receive the grace to do better in the future.

Ponder:

At the end of our lives, we will be judged by both our public and private behavior. It is important to remember that what I do or say to the least of these, I also do to our Lord.  

Pray:

Dear God, please help me to judge myself in relation to You, not against the standard of other people’s behavior.

Pray Together:

It is important to set the example of going to Confession regularly. Invite your children along, helping them to see participating in this sacrament is a grace and a normal part of Catholic life.
