Discover the importance of hope in daily life through acts of service, inspired by Matthew 12:14-21. Embrace small ways to uplift others each day.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:14-21
The aspect of this Gospel that stands out most to me is hope. Although Jesus knew the Pharisees wanted to put Him to death, He still went about doing good and curing those who followed Him. He did not fight or cry out. And it is “in His name the Gentiles will hope.” (Matthew 12:21).
Hope is vital to a life well-lived. Without hope, it is easy to fall into apathy or even depression. As Catholics, our hope is in the cross and the saving power of Jesus. Even as we watch the world tear itself apart, we know that Christ has conquered sin and death. I try to start every day with hope and service. I know I cannot cure the world of its ills, but I can do something in my small sphere of influence to show kindness and love to people with whom I come into contact. It can be as small as helping someone on campus find their way to admissions, opening the door for someone burdened with too much to carry, or going out of my way to provide a quick response to a request for assistance at work. I try to leave the door open to allow God to work in my life by asking Him in the morning to show me how I can be of service that day.
Ponder:
What are some simple ways I can be of service in my daily life at home and at work?
Pray:
Dear God, please show me how I can serve the people around me today.
Pray Together:
Consider using mealtimes to discuss opportunities for service during the day. Breakfast could be a good time to remind children to look for ways to serve others, and dinner could be a good time to discuss ways we have served – or have been served – during the day.
