Discover the importance of inner integrity over outward appearances in this reflection on Matthew 23, inspired by personal experiences of faith and parenting.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 23:27-32
“On the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy . . . ” Matthew 23:28
My daughter runs on her high school cross country team. She feels pressure to perform so she doesn’t let her coach or her teammates down. Her coach recently gave a speech to push the kids to the next level. Because my daughter can’t take the pressure, it pushed her over the edge. I talked her off the cliff by explaining that all she can do is the best she can do. If she gives a race her all, the outcome doesn’t matter. She needs to be at peace with the results. That peace only comes, however, if she honestly and truly tries her best.
This concept is the antidote to Matthew 23. Jesus calls out the scribes and Pharisees for putting on a show without putting in the effort. It’s easy and ego-boosting to receive the praise of men. So, they take the easy road--focusing on the outside to gain attention and praise while ignoring what matters: honestly and truly trying their best to live godly lives.
This concept is also the antidote to the peer pressure I always felt when my kids were young. During playdates with other kids who were dressed in the latest kid-fashion, eating vegetables like candy, I’d look over at my kids who were in hand-me-downs, eating actual candy! Yes, there were some instances when I felt like a failure (and still do in my weaker moments). Yet, other times, I recognized that I was honestly and truly giving my all to my kids: nurturing their faith, molding their morals and values, and instilling kindness in their hearts. It may not have looked like it on the outside, but God saw my efforts on the inside.
Ponder:
What matters to me more: how my kids appear on the outside to the world or how they appear on the inside to God?
Pray:
Seer of Hearts, remind me that how my kids and I appear on the inside to You is all that matters.
Pray Together:
For one day, cover all the mirrors in your home so you can focus on how you appear on the inside to God.
