Today's Gospel: Matthew 23:13-22

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is speaking firmly about our intentions and actions in the world. He was very disappointed in the Pharisees being hypocrites by the way they were living their lives. It seems that the Pharisees were saying one thing and living their lives completely the opposite of their words.

It made me think of how many times I have professed my faith in Mass and then gone into the world and not acted like the Catholic I claim to be. In all honesty, this may happen as soon as I try to leave the church parking lot! Perhaps, that’s a small thing, but aren’t I supposed to be a Catholic in all things, not just by word but also by deed? Jesus not only calls out the Pharisees in one action but in many. If I am honest with myself, I have not been living out my faith as a mom, teacher, friend, or just a person in the world.

As a mom and teacher, I often tell other parents that their kids are always watching what they do, not what they say. So, am I willing to not disagree with a coworker in a meeting instead of sharing my “better” idea? Am I willing to allow a  driver in front of me even though I am late to pick up my son?

When and if I get to heaven, I don’t want to hear Jesus say to me, “Woe to you, you will not enter the Kingdom of God,” but instead say, “I have been waiting for you.”

Ponder:

How can I intentionally be a Catholic by example?

Pray:

Lord, please guide me to know how I can be an example of Your love in the world throughout the day.
