Daily Gospel Reflection for August 28, 2026

Today's Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13

St. Monica is a beautiful example of prayer without ceasing. She prayed her entire life for her son Augustine, hoping he would love Christ and follow Him. Augustine was very far from Christ, and the way he lived his life was why St. Monica prayed so much for him.

She was ready for Christ’s second coming because she prayed for her son and her unloving husband and had faith that these men would become followers of Christ.

I think most of us are more unprepared, like the virgins in today’s Gospel. We think that Jesus’s return is not going to happen in our lifetime, so we keep living our lives like we have more time than perhaps we really do. We put off Confession for a week, or a month, and by the time we know it, years have gone by. We don’t go to Mass one Sunday, and then we don’t even realize that we only go on Christmas.

When He returns or I am at my judgment, I don’ t want Him to say that He doesn’t know me. How terrifying that would be. Not because of my judgment, but because I disappointed Him.

Perhaps instead of putting off going to Confession or Mass, it's best that we don’t leave for tomorrow what we can do today. The greatest gift would be that Our Lord says, "I am here waiting for you."

How can you become closer to the Lord in your daily life?

Pray:

Lord, help me to stay close to You every day with Your love and grace.

Pray Together:

As you travel somewhere together as a family, pray the Rosary or listen to a Bible story.
