Today's Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30

The lesson in today’s Gospel is that we are supposed to use our talents for God, our master. This means something different for each of us and in varying degrees. I’ve heard people say, “I don’t have any talents,” but they do. Consider all the wonderful mothers we know, who are raising their children in an atmosphere of faith and love. This may be the most necessary talent on earth.

Being a loving mother takes strength and energy, patience and fortitude. It takes knowledge of nutrition, caring for wounds, multi-tasking, and organization, just to name a few of the talents a mother uses. A mother doesn’t have a regular shift, like other vocations, but must be on duty at all hours of the day and night, even when she’s sick or bone-tired. She must be a cheerleader, coach, mentor, and guide for her children. She must make sure they feel loved, even while setting boundaries and expecting good behavior. These talents aren’t handed to us with a guidebook on the birthday of our first child. They are learned and honed over time, with experience that includes many mistakes. Yet, a good mother keeps trying.

Never feel shy to say, “I’m a stay-at-home mom,” or “I’m a working mom.” Say it with confidence and pride, for you are doing God’s will, God’s work. You are a part of molding children to become faith-loving adults who can function with self-sufficiency. No small task.

As mothers, we follow our Blessed Mother as she faithfully and lovingly supports her Son in every way possible.

Ponder:

Am I using my talents as a mother to the fullest extent, in every way I can? Can I learn to be more patient?

Pray:

Dear Lord, please guide me in my vocation of motherhood so that I may emulate Your beloved mother. Please bless my children, whom You love even more than I do.
