Reflect on the importance of prioritizing faith over worldly distractions this school year, fostering spiritual growth in family life through prayer and Sacraments.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27

I remember, growing up, my parents said routinely to me and my siblings, “We live in the world, we are not of the world.” It was like an anthem or motto, the answer to many questions. I didn't necessarily understand what that even meant when I was young, but I heard it so often, the seed was planted.

The idea that we are not made for this world can be easy to forget. The cacophony of voices in our modern culture telling us that we need to buy more, do more, join more can feel deafening. We aren't “good parents” if our children aren't involved in every club or sport, if they don't wear the right clothes or have the right toys, if they don't have a large circle of friends, or if they aren't in the right music or dance lessons.

With the new school year upon us, I challenge all of us to do less. Let's try to plant the seed for our children that we aren't supposed to be too attached to this world or the things in it.

There is nothing wrong with being involved in activities, having good friends, and enjoying things in this life when it is all rightly ordered. But when the clubs, sports, lessons, friends, and all the rest of it begins to consume all of our time, it can become an obstacle for us.

This school year, maybe we could all try to slow down a bit, remember where our true home is, and be less concerned with the things of this world.

Ponder:

How might you try to slow down and make more room in your family life for prayer and the Sacraments? How can you lead by example and teach your children to worry less about the things of this world?

Pray:

Lord, please help me to always place my trust in You and prioritize You over the things of this world.

Pray Together:

Add one new thing to your family prayer routine this year. If you don't have family prayer time, perhaps a daily Our Father, morning offering, or Rosary together. If you already do something like that, could you add monthly Adoration, monthly Reconciliation, or daily Mass? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.
