Daily Gospel Reflection for September 1, 2026

Today's Gospel: Luke 4:31-37

Years ago, our local TV news sportscaster was known for saying “With authority!” when he reported a player making an awesome play. It might have been a baseball player who hit the ball out of the park, a basketball player who did a Michael Jordan-like slam dunk, or a quarterback who took a long, unhindered run towards the end zone. The phrase quickly became part of our family’s lexicon as our two boys loved sports. I can still hear them as they drove to the basket for a slam dunk or hit the baseball with all their might, yelling, “With authority!”

I haven’t ever been able to read this Scripture without thinking of that phrase. I can imagine Jesus teaching and someone in the back yelling, “With authority!” Or, as He drives out the demon and everyone is shocked and speechless, someone (maybe the local sportscaster) yells out, “With authority!”

To speak with authority, a person must know what they are talking about, they must thoroughly understand their subject. Jesus was very different from any of the teachers the people had heard before. He spoke with authority. There was no question, doubt, or uncertainty about what He meant; He knew what he was talking about! That greatly contrasted with the other teachers of the day; the only authority they had was their own, and they argued interpretation and application endlessly. Not since Moses had anyone spoken with such power and influence. And even the demon recognized the authority. How different it was to have a teacher like this! 

Jesus then passed along this authority to His apostles, who in turn have passed it along to their successors. And so it is with this same authority that the Church teaches today, through the Magisterium--with authority! Isn’t that a wonderful gift?
