Explore the power of intercession and service in the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, and discover how we can help those in need.
Today's Gospel: Luke 4:38-44
Jesus healed many people while He traveled through the Holy Land. In most reports of those healings, we see Jesus asking the sick person to have faith, and only after the sick person responds does He perform the healing. In this passage, Peter's mother-in-law was suffering with a high fever, so those who loved her probably asked for healing on her behalf. They showed a lot of faith.
Here we can see the power of intercession and how important it is for us to pray for those we love or for our neighbors in general. Sometimes the person in need cannot pray, either because of health conditions or because of psychological distress. The person is so focused on the problem that she can't even pray. So, it's up to us to intercede and pray for her, knowing that one day we might be the one in need.
Another aspect of this healing of Peter's mother-in-law is that as soon as she got better, she started to serve them, including Jesus. I think it is the only report of a healing in which the person started to serve Jesus. Many others started following Jesus, but she started serving. The evangelist adds an adverb: immediately. It was her way of thanking Jesus for the grace received. She understood that we are here to help and serve one another and by doing that, we are pleasing God, who gave everything to us.
We must learn this readiness to serve, and we can seek the help of the best role model, our Mother Mary, who immediately after Jesus's conception, went to serve her cousin Elizabeth and is always ready to help and take care of us, her children.
Ponder:
How ready am I to serve those around me? What can I do to be more helpful?
Pray:
My Mother and Queen, you are the most powerful intercessor. Please help me intercede for those who need. Help me also to be ready to serve whomever needs me.
Pray Together:
During family prayer, encourage your children to pose this question to one family member the next day: “What can I do for you today?” This can be a weekly challenge for all family members.
