Daily Gospel Reflection for September 3, 2026

Reflect on the importance of surrendering to God's will as illustrated in the Gospel of Luke, highlighting blessings that come from trust and obedience.

Today's Gospel: Luke 5:1-11

Many Biblical figures have gone before you. Some have readily accepted God’s will, while others have questioned it. Throughout Scripture, we see a varying level of responses to God.

One example in the Old Testament is noteworthy. Naaman is an army commander who is looking to be healed of leprosy. He seeks the Prophet Elisha for help, who employs him to wash in the Jordan seven times (2 Kings 5:10). Naaman respond angrily, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand there to call on the name of the Lord his God, and would move his hand over the place, and thus cure the leprous spot” (2 Kings 5:11). However, Naaman has to surrender his own idea of how God should act and accept God’s terms in order to be healed.

On the flip side, Simon, a seasoned fisherman, though forthright with Jesus, is willing to give his directive a chance. Jesus said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon replies,

“Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.”

When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing (Luke 5:4-6). Imagine their astonishment!

The Scriptures remind us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways” (Isaiah 55:8). Those who question God’s ways open themselves to greater difficulty or missed gifts whereas those who follow and trust God’s will open themselves to blessings (even when undeserving). His ways might surprise or even confuse us, but they’re worth our acceptance. Our yes is the only thing holding us back from experiencing the glory of God. Just ask Mary.

Ponder:

Do you struggle to accept God’s approach or readily accept His will? In what ways can you better surrender to God’s will?

Pray:

Jesus, open my heart to accept Your directives so that I might experience Your bountiful blessings. 

Pray Together:

Pray with your children. Include a prayer asking God to show them His will for their lives and the grace to accept it.
