Today's Gospel: Luke 4:38-44
We women can be easily wounded. Sometimes those wounds fester and affect our well-being.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. Unlike other healings, He did not just lay hands on her to heal her illness. He “stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her” (Luke 4:39). Then she rose and waited on them.
In the passages before and after this narrative, Jesus is seen rebuking demons and unclean spirits, and then they leave their victims. I am not saying that Peter’s mother-in-law was possessed by a demon, but perhaps she had an unclean spirit. Maybe a spirit of resentment or ingratitude.
When complaints and wounds fester, they lead to resentment. Depression can set in. As our emotional health deteriorates, our physical health is affected. We need to rebuke those unclean (unhealthy) spirits. Release them. Let it go!
How? Through prayer. Find your lonely place. Make a time and a place to be alone with Jesus. Ask Him to stand over you and rebuke the unclean spirit within so that it will leave you. Remember, whenever God takes something away, He always replaces it with something better – His grace.
It is good and necessary to be alone with Jesus, to retreat in order to be refilled.
Then we can rise to serve others well.
Ponder:
Do I have a resentment, a complaint, or a hurt I need to rebuke and release?
Pray:
Jesus, I am wounded by my sin. Heal me and fill me with Your grace.
