Daily Gospel Reflection for September 7, 2026

Explore the importance of the Sabbath in light of Jesus's teachings in Luke 6:6-11, emphasizing love and compassion over strict law adherence.

Today's Gospel: Luke 6:6-11

This passage is challenging, and we may think Jesus is making an argument against the law. However, we can recall Matthew: 5:17, where He says, “I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill.”

So how does this apply here? On the surface, this seems like anything but fulfilling. However, we can also remember Mark 12:31, where Jesus says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Thus, He chooses compassion over adherence to the law. Jesus challenges us to think about this when we need to understand the intentions of such laws in the context of doing what is right and good.

Unfortunately, we sometimes places laws and rules above our Christianity. I think Jesus's message here is that the laws are not meant to restrict us, but to free us to follow what God has placed in our hearts, which is love. 

The other thing I find challenging with this passage is people sometimes use it as an excuse to not adhere to the Sabbath.  So quickly, many decide not to go to church on Sunday, a clear acknowledgment that the Sabbath is not important to them.  Sunday is still the Sabbath and Jesus the Son of God is the Lord of the Sabbath. He did not abolish the Sabbath but fulfilled it, and we would be wise to remember this.

Ponder:

How can we remind those that have fallen away to remember the Sabbath is still the Sabbath created for us through God’s grace for our benefit?

Pray:

I pray that those consciously not attending church remember that in the eyes of God, Sunday is the Sabbath, a day of worship created for them. May their hearts be warmed by the love of God to return to Him freely so they may learn again about the true happiness gained in honoring the Sabbath.

Pray Together:

Try spending multiple times on Sunday remembering it as the Sabbath. This includes attendance at Mass, but is intended to be a full day of worship. Parents can remind their children during the day at meals, or even at play.
