Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 6:12-19

Jesus spent the night in prayer, apart from His disciples. When He returned to the group, He selected The Twelve, the first heads of His Church. And once He had selected them from among His followers, he ministered to the crowd that was following their group.

How many people were healed by Christ that day is unknown, but I’m sure He was exhausted by the end of His day.

Peter Claver, the Jesuit saint we honor today, also ministered to the needy, even to the point of exhaustion. He would beg for food for the slaves entering Colombia through his port, feeding them, teaching them, healing them as best he could with his medical skills. He would continue to minister to them on the plantations where they worked, begging for them to be treated humanely.

As parents, we might not be called to serve to the point of exhaustion, but sometimes we have days (or weeks!) like that. Remember that though Jesus and St. Peter Claver served, they also made sure to rest. Our service to our families won’t be beneficial if we don’t take a moment to rest in prayer as well as physically.

Ponder:

As I serve my family, am I remembering to care for myself as well? Am I taking time to rest in prayer and to rest physically, so I can continue to minister to those I love?

Pray:

Lord, help me get through those days when I must minister when I’m tired, and help me remember to take time to rest so You can recharge me, too.
