Explore the challenge of loving our enemies as presented in Luke 6:27-38, and discover how trusting God can transform our generosity and peace.

Today's Gospel: Luke 6:27-38

As a recovering perfectionist, this Gospel passage is hard for me to hear. I feel like there is no way that I can ever do or be enough in order to fulfill all the commands that our Lord is giving. And not only is He asking us to give much, but it's whom He is asking us to give to. Not our loved ones, not people we like, but our enemies.

My heart started to recoil in self-protection, and some protest bubbled up with a desire to respond to each of Jesus's directions with a "but." But Jesus, how can I possibly love (and bless!) my enemies when they have hurt me so much? But how can I possibly give to someone who has already taken so much from me? Maybe I could "do to others as you would have them do to you" if those others actually did something kind or thoughtful for a change!

If I'm giving to, loving on, and praying for people who will give me nothing in return and possibly even take more than I feel able to give, where does that leave me?  My self-sufficiency and self-protection go into overdrive because I'm relying on myself or other people to fill my needs instead of God. If I'm able to trust God to take care of me and fill my needs, then giving to everyone won't take away my peace, even if I'm giving to my enemies.

I can never truly fill myself, but God can. He always gives in abundance, especially when we are generous with whomever He places in front of us.

"Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap."

Ponder:

Is there a person in your life that you are struggling to be generous to with your time, talent, or treasure?

Pray:

Jesus, please open our hearts to be generous to all the people that You put into our path and to trust You to care for and fill our needs.

Pray Together:

Pick a person that is difficult to love, whether it's someone you know personally or someone you know of from news media and pray as a family for that person's needs and conversion.
