Discover how Mark 12:1-12 challenges our ambitions and invites us to recognize God's presence in our lives. Reflect on true values over worldly success.

Today's Gospel: Mark 12:1-12

What a difficult Gospel passage! How wild is it that the owner of the vineyard would sacrifice man after man and then sacrifice even his own son! This must have been shocking to the ears of the listeners. I wonder, did they have any idea of the significance of the parable?

Of course, we see it now, knowing that God did indeed send His only Son for the sake of us all, only to be beaten, mocked, and murdered.

The tenants were clearly out for their own self-interests. They must have mocked the vineyard owner for foolishly sending so many to the same fate, but, in the end, they gained nothing and they lost everything, including their lives.

How often do we get distracted in life by our own ambitions? How often to do take advantage, even inadvertently, of people who seem simple and foolish in order to make our own gain? We are quick to imagine we would never do such a thing, but how often to do seek rewards for our own work even if someone else deserves a share? How often do we take advantage of someone who doesn’t appear to be pulling their weight?

Are we pausing to recognize God working in our lives, or are we moving forward with swift ambition to achieve worldly successes? Jesus has already asked in this Gospel what good it would be to gain the world if in doing so, one loses his soul.

Ponder:

Are you focused on seeing God in your midst, or are you focused on worldly ambition and just rewards for just efforts?

Pray:

Lord, you sent your Son, Jesus, and many in His time did not recognize Him for who He was. Help us to see Jesus in those around us every day and place the salvation of our souls over worldly ambition.

Pray Together:

Share “God-sightings” with one another. Reflecting on seeing God in the movements of our daily lives can help to keep our minds fixed on Him.
