Daily Gospel Reflection for September 19, 2026

Today's Gospel: Luke 8:4-15

The Parable of the Sower is one of the Bible stories that I've heard many times. However, the beauty of this parable is that it can hit differently depending on what phase of life you are in when you read it. As I was reading it this time, especially verses 11-15 when Jesus is explaining the meaning of the parable, I could see myself in all the scenarios. I was reminded of times when I didn’t turn to God during a hardship, let temptation get the best of me, strayed away from my faith for a bit, and more recently, let my anxieties choke me.

But then I look at the best-case scenario of the seeds that fell on good ground. I realize that we all have the opportunity to get there, even if the seeds landed on thorns, trodden paths, and rocky soil in the past. We have that opportunity to open our hearts and fully embrace God and His message through the sacraments, particularly Reconciliation, for when we make mistakes.

And in our parenthood, we get to become the sowers of faith for our children. We can do our best to allow them to find the good soil and grow their own faith while realizing that they may fall off the path for a little bit. But with a strong faith foundation, we can hope and pray that they find their way back.

Ponder:

What type of soil do you find yourself in right now: thorny, rocky, a trodden path, or rich soil? If it's not where you want to be, what changes can you make to get back to the good soil and grow in your faith?

Pray:

Jesus, thank You for giving us the sacrament of Reconciliation so that when we fall away, we can come back to You and grow in our faith more. Help us grow our faith so that we can pass it on to our children.

Pray Together:

When is the last time your family prayed an act of contrition together or all went to Confession (if applicable)? For younger kids, experiment by planting some seeds in rocky soil and then some more in regular soil. Let them see which ones grows and which ones do not.
