Today's Gospel: Luke 7:31-35

On my best days, I am up with the sun, nestling a cup of black coffee and resting in God’s Word. But too often, I venture into the world of Catholic social media before properly arming myself in prayer.

“I’ll just glance at Twitter,” I tell myself as the grounds brew. Or “Just a few moments on Instagram stories,” I promise as I set my journal to the side and reach for my phone.

I can imagine in these moments that it is me about whom Jesus speaks when He asks the question posed at the outset of today’s Gospel,

“To what shall I compare the people of this generation?”

Jesus stands before a crowd who has already heard of and judged John the Baptist’s messages. He knows that He, too, will face scorn and derision.

So much has changed in our world, and just so much remains the same. Even among people of faith, there remain divisions about the “right” ways to live as a follower of Jesus Christ. Instead of spreading a message of faith, hope, and charity, too often we fall prey to name-calling, division, and judgment of one another.

Luke’s Gospel passage for today ends with a passage that I find unsettling:

“But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

What does this mean for the faith life I desire to live? How will the way I choose to act, serve, and love today vindicate what Jesus came to teach us?

Ponder:

Who are the witnesses of God’s love that I choose to follow and learn from today? How does what they teach and how they live impact my faith life?

Pray:

Jesus, Master and Savior, help me seek You with my heart and profess Your love with my life.
