Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 6:37-40

Today, we celebrate the Commemoration of All of the Faithful Departed, commonly known as “All Soul’s Day.” As we pray with today’s Gospel passage, a portion of the challenging Bread of Life Discourse, we ponder not only the gift of the Eucharist, but also the lives of those who have gone before us in death. Today, as we are called to do every day, we pray in a special way for the repose of their souls.

Amidst His important teachings on the Eucharist, which we Catholics believe as the True Presence of Jesus Christ, our Savior takes time to acknowledge His ultimate mission from God:

“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

We are called to see God, to believe in God, and to journey daily toward God. The Eucharist, the Bread of Life, nourishes us here on earth until that moment--as yet unknown to us--when we too will hope to rest in God’s loving embrace. Jesus begins this teaching with the words that offer me such great hope when He says,

“I will not reject anyone who comes to me.”

Today, as I pray in a special way for my loved ones who have died, I will go forward in their memory to be nourished by the Bread of Life, God’s love made whole within my very being. In their memory and taught by the legacy of their examples--and because Jesus loves me so fully that He would give His life for me--I will answer God’s call in my own way.

Ponder:

How will I pause today to remember the faithful departed and those with no one to pray for them?

Pray:

Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, I thank You for the gift of Your love within me. God, my heavenly Father, please draw my departed loved ones into the restful love of Your embrace.
