Reflection by Colleen O'Dowd

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:1-6

We know, serve, love, and are loved by an extravagant God.

Who else would look at me with such love, and through spiritual adoption in Baptism, give me the same inheritance as His Beloved Son?

God doesn’t need me to proclaim His Kingdom, but He desires that I do this in Jesus’ name.
God doesn’t need me to cast out demons, but He desires that I do this in Jesus’ name.
God doesn’t need me to cure the sick, but He desires that I do this in Jesus’ name.

How do we know? Because if we are who God the Father says we are (and who Jesus says we are through Baptism), God has both called and equipped us with the spiritual DNA to do these things, and He shows us it’s true through Jesus. Jesus confirms this in many ways, but in today’s Gospel by sending the Twelve to do these three aforementioned things.

The great challenge here is not actually the three things, it’s the single-heartedness and detachment it takes to do them. Good thing we have a patient and loving God, who places us right in our own sphere or circle of influence by which He means for us to do these three things. Often right in our own home, our kitchen, or our carpool.

God’s providence is always present in the world, but the crazy thing is He doesn’t need our help. He desires our participation and that of our friends, spouses, children, and families.

Ponder:

What do I need to hear proclaimed about the Kingdom of God today? What do I need to be freed from? What do I need to be cured of?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I desire to be single-hearted. Help me to know how and to whom I can proclaim Your Kingdom, whom You want me to help free from bondage, and whom You want me to help cure from sickness.
