Daily Gospel Reflection for September 27, 2026

Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

We all struggle with consistency at times. We might offer to pray for someone and then forget about it when we sit down to recollect our days. We might agree to get a certain kind of juice from the store, but forget to put it on the list. Life is busy. Distractions abound.

The Lord doesn’t point to the inconsistencies in the two sons in today’s Gospel. Rather, He looks to what ultimately got done. To say we’re going to follow the Father’s will is not the same as doing it. And the doing it is finally what counts.

God is always consistent. He means what He says and He always follows through. Even when our prayers aren’t answered as we’d hoped, we know that He has a plan for us. His steadfastness is reason to trust Him, and it’s a trait we ought to look to emulate, if we really want to be “perfect, just as [our] heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). 

It’s difficult to trust someone when what they say doesn’t align with what they do. Generally, people value integrity—that is, unity of thought, word, and deed—when they recognize it in others. We can see it first and perfectly in our Father.

The closer we are to the Lord, the simpler it will be to live simply and with integrity. When we spend time with Him in Adoration, receive His grace through the sacraments, and converse with Him in prayer, we follow the path of St. John the Baptist: as we decrease, the Lord increases within us.

With His guidance, we can more often say what we mean and mean what we say. When other people notice that integrity in us, it will be as a reflection of Him.

Lord, my rock, help me to unite my will to Yours and be steadfast in faith no matter what I face today.

Put a sticky note on the fridge and keep a tally of when family members say yes to a chore and do it right away!
