Discover the transformative power of trust in Jesus as illustrated through the royal official's faith in John 4:43-54 and learn to embrace childlike dependency on God.
Today's Gospel: John 4:43-54
The openness of the hearts in this Gospel reading is startling. The royal official is sure that Jesus can heal his son, even without being in the same room. He not only believes what Christ says, but has humility and hope enough to later perceive that the healing happened precisely when Jesus pronounced it. His conviction is so sure, so contagious that his entire household comes to believe.
It’s hard to imagine this happening today. People are skeptical, prideful, and afraid what believing in the power of Jesus would mean for their lives. By “people” I don’t only mean those who pass by churches on Sunday mornings, but those inside. Many of us carry reasons to doubt or fear that Jesus is who He says He is. What would happen if we let those go?
In the Litany of Trust, there are lines asking the Lord for deliverance “From all suspicion of Your words and promises,” and “From the rebellion against childlike dependency on You.” We can’t really trust God when we harbor grudges or suspect Him to be false in any way.
“Childlike” is a good way to describe this royal official. Imagine a child asking her mother if she can play with Play-Doh or some other beloved toy. When she gets a "yes," she doesn’t hang around to debate it or see if the answer will hold. Rather, she runs off to rejoice in the desire of her heart.
The life of one’s son is surely more meaningful than an afternoon squashing color into different shapes, though the posture of such a child is one we might focus on emulating. With it, we can trust—as is stated elsewhere in the Litany—“That You always hear me and in Your goodness always respond to me.”
Ponder:
Do I trust my whole heart to the Lord? What do I hold back from Him?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, help me to learn to trust You more completely and heal the wounds that have led to my fears and doubts.
Pray Together:
Find the Litany of Trust, written by the Sisters of Life, and pray a few lines each day as you grow in trust in the Lord.
