Today's Gospel: Luke 9:57-62
Detachment is a prerequisite for living as a true follower of Jesus Christ. The Gospel today tells us that our love for Him must surpass our attachments to the people in our lives, even the ones who are closest to us. When Jesus tells us that “the Son of Man has nowhere to rest His head,” he is reminding us that this world is not our home, and we should strive to overcome all excessive attachments to people and material things.
St. Thérèse, the Little Flower, is a wonderful example of this detachment. Losing her mother at a young age, she learned early on that love for God and union with Him above all else is the secret to peace and inner happiness. Like St. Thérèse, we should give Jesus the first place in our lives and make sure that no human relationship prevents us from doing His will.
Detachment is a balancing act for mothers in the world. Our vocation as mothers is not to abandon everything for the cloistered life, as it was for St. Thérèse. On one hand, we love and support our children as they grow; however, we must also gently release our hold on them as they mature and learn to entrust them to God. We love our children by placing them confidently in the hands of the Lord, knowing that He loves them more perfectly than we ever could.
Ponder:
Does my love for Jesus surpass my love and attachment to other relationships in my life?
Pray:
Jesus, I want to follow You and be faithful to You. Please help me to make You first in my life. Teach me to be detached from all that hinders my relationship with You.
